Explore rural Scotland – places to stay

Yurtel, Ythan Valley, Aberdeenshire

Hidden gems for explorers – Scotland’s best places to stay

Do you like your backpacking breaks to take you off the beaten track? If so, it’s important to have somewhere comfortable and affordable (and ideally beautiful) to spend the night, so you’ve got plenty of energy to explore your rural surroundings during the day.

We’ve found a few possibilities in Scotland that we hope will inspire you, so take a look at these...

Ythan Valley, Aberdeenshire

WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT IT? Nestled in a meadow in Smithfield, near Ellon, Ythan Valley campsite is quiet, relaxing and family-owned. You can order homemade organic bread and free range eggs to enjoy for breakfast – and there are even toilets and showers, despite the site’s remote location. Recycling is encouraged and bookings are essential.

The Lazy Duck, Nethy Bridge, Cairngorms

ACCOMMODATION? Hostel, eco-huts, lodges and more

WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT IT? If you fancy a peaceful contrast with the excitement of nearby Aviemore, this organic six-acre homestead is the answer. All accommodation options are small, cosy and sustainable, surrounded by wildlife and beautiful woodland.

MORE INFO? Call 01479 821092 or visit the Lazy Duck website.

Blinkbonny Wood, East Lothian

WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT IT? Picturesque, private and rustic, Blinkbonny Wood overlooks the Firth of Forth... and it’s pretty close to wild camping. This means no showers or running water at the site itself, but there are fire pits and a composting toilet – and both drinking water and firewood can be purchased. Or, if you’d prefer to enjoy the biodiversity of this working woodland from a plusher base, the nearby small village of Gifford has several B&Bs.

South Whittlieburn Farm, Ayrshire

ACCOMMODATION? B&B, caravan site and campsite

WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT IT? This sheep farm in Brisbane Glen is peaceful with great views. You can choose the well-equipped caravanning and campsite facilities; or the farmhouse itself, which offers a four-star bed-and-breakfast experience. Nearby activities include hill walking, horse riding and sailing; and it’s only a couple of miles from the coastal resort of Largs if you want to mix things up a bit.
