Five weird but fun things to do in London

Unusual things to do in London

Whether you’ve been to London and seen all the most famous sights already, or you’re new to the city but don’t enjoy typical tourist stuff, we’ve got some great quirky ideas for you when you next visit the capital.

After all, great memories can be made from the strangest things...

1)    LONDON BRIDGE EXPERIENCE & TOMBS
We think the ‘& Tombs’ part of the title may well have given the main appeal of this one away. Yes, it’s scary. REALLY scary. If you love to be thrilled and terrified in equal measure, the London Bridge Experience will be right up your street. This walking tour explores 2000 years of history beneath the city’s most famous bridge, where you’ll witness alarmingly detailed reconstructions of past events like the killings of Jack the Ripper and the Great Fire of London. The organisers helpfully assure potential guests (victims?) that “staff are on hand at all times for those who cannot handle the horror”.

2)    JAMES SMITH & SONS
If classic accessories are more your thing, take a trip to the world-famous umbrella shop of James Smith and Sons. Established in 1830, it’s still a family business and makes umbrellas, sticks and canes for both men and women. Few things are more synonymous with London than the traditional gentlemen’s umbrella – and this charming shop still bears many of the hallmarks of shopping in the Victorian era, from original fittings to the stunning craftsmanship of its wares. It’s well worth a lengthy wander and could provide you with the perfect souvenir or gift.

3)    JUNKYARD GOLF
This is crazy golf on a whole new level – and in truly bizarre surroundings. There are three nine-whole courses to choose from, intriguingly named Frank, Pedro and Helga – with a combination of obstacles including spa pools, UV lighting and even speed boats. But that’s not all. Themed cocktails are sold in Junkyard Golf’s four bars, while street food is served by Barts Dog Kart and Big Grillie Style. The venue’s motto is “taking golf back to the streets” – though to be honest, we’re not sure if it was ever actually ON the streets...

4)    DANS LE NOIR
If your French language skills have dimmed since schooldays, ‘Dans Le Noir’ translates as ‘In The Dark’ – and it’s one of London’s most talked-about food experiences. You dine in complete darkness, embarking on a sensory journey which surprises and delights in numerous ways, with guidance provided by blind servers. The fresh menus change with the seasons and are matched with carefully selected wines. Simply tell the staff anything that you can’t eat and they’ll handle the rest for you.

5)    ZOMBIE EXPERIENCE LONDON
Time for another scary one – but this time action is the name of the game. For £115 each, each participant is provided with training, equipment, make-up and props, then sent to battle it out in the Zombie Bunker. It’s great for groups and corporate team building; with various themed activities include Boot Camp, Secret Bunker, Shopping Mall, Asylum and Urban Battle, among others.
